Personalize with Themes,
add functionality with Extensions

Firefox is the most customizable browser on the planet; you can easily tailor Firefox to your needs for the best possible browsing experience.

To keep things simple and fast, Firefox has been designed to only contain the features that most people use. Users then add the more unusual features that they want through Extensions. Extensions are small add-ons that increase the functionality of Firefox. They can add anything from a toolbar button to a completely new feature. Themes allow you to change the way Firefox looks using new graphics and colors. Installing is as simple as choosing what you like and selecting Install Now — the feature will be automatically downloaded and installed for you. Theme and Extension settings can be accessed from the Tools menu in Firefox.

This CD includes some of the most popular Themes and Extensions that are currently available for Firefox. To install them follow the instructions on those pages. Didn't find what you were looking for? There are many more Extensions and Themes available on Mozilla Update (online).

Browse faster with Tabbed Browsing

Tabbed Browsing is a powerful feature that makes surfing the web faster and more convenient. Managing multiple web pages within a single window helps to keep your desktop and taskbar free from clutter and allows you to keep reading while other pages load in the background. Web pages are loaded in "tabs" within the same browser window, making it easy to switch back and forth among multiple web pages. Tabbed browsing is perfect for reading the news or sifting through search results. You can open a new tab by going to the File > New Tab or Ctrl + T with your keyboard. After you type in a web address or search , press Alt + Enter to open in a new tab. To open a link in a new tab, right click on it and choose "Open in New Tab," or just middle click the link. Then you can continue reading the current page while the links load in the background, saving you lots of time.

Tabbed Browsing in Action

Tabbed browsing screenshotJust about everything is faster with tabbed browsing: searching the web, reading news, reading webmail and comparison shopping. When searching the web you can keep the list of search results in one tab and open each result in a new tab. You can easily compare results by moving from one tab to the next. You can load results in the background and when you are ready to view them, easily switch to that tab. The picture shows search results for "gift baskets" in tabbed windows displayed in Firefox.

For more detailed information about Tabbed Browsing, visit Firefox Central (online).

Firefox makes searching easier

You can access the search box by pointing your mouse to the search box on the top right corner of the browser. Enter your query term and press Enter. You no longer have to visit a web site to perform a search, it's all available right from your browser. Firefox comes pre-installed with the most popular and useful search engines: Google, Yahoo, Amazon, eBay, and Dictionary.com. Best of all you can add more search plugins with Add engines.

"Find as you type" allows you to search the current page simply by typing. When you start typing the "find" toolbar will display and the matching text will be highlighted immediately helping you to find what you’re looking for faster than ever. You can easily skip to the next occurrence by pressing enter, or even highlight every single occurrence at once by selecting highlight.

Search in Action

Firefox is integrated with Google's "I'm Feeling Lucky" Search.  Type in a term like 'Williams Sonoma' or 'Oakland Raiders' in the Location bar and you will be taken to the official site.

Firefox offers great security

If you have ever experienced the irritation of spyware or viruses you will know how important security is these days. Many undesirable programs try to enter your computer through your browser. To stop them, Firefox has been designed to be very secure. When using it, you can rest assured that your privacy and your computer are safe. However, nothing is perfect and security updates are sometimes necessary. Fortunately, Firefox makes this easy. If there is a security update for Firefox a red button will appear; click it and you will be guided through the update.

“Security experts are recommending people ditch Microsoft's Internet Explorer and seek an alternate browser... Beware of spyware. If you can, use the Mozilla Firefox browser…” -  USA Today

Read the headlines in a flash with Live Bookmarks

"Live Bookmarks" is a new technology in Firefox that lets you view news and website headlines with your other bookmarks. Live Bookmarks uses "RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds" or "Atom feeds" to constantly update your bookmarks. With one glance quickly see the latest headlines from your favorite sites. Then go directly to the articles that interest you.

A site is enabled for Live Bookmarks when you see this icon on the bottom right corner of the browser. Clicking on the icon and selecting the feed will bring up the Add Bookmark dialog. Select 'OK' and you will see the Live Bookmark with the rest of your bookmarks. Many people find it especially convenient to save Live Bookmarks in their Bookmarks Toolbar folder as in the picture. You can subscribe to the BBC World News feed by using the orange icon on this page.

Live Bookmarks in Action

Most news sites and blogs use Live Bookmarks to publish their most recent headlines. The web site determines the number of headlines displayed and how often the headlines are updated.

The picture shows headlines from Yahoo and the BBC News displayed in the Bookmarks Sidebar. Clicking on a headline takes you right to the article.

You can find many more RSS feeds at: Technorati, Feedster, and Syndic8.com (online). Again, more information is available at Firefox Central (online).

Say goodbye to popups

Firefox stops popup ads from interfering with your browsing. When a website attempts to open a popup, Firefox puts you in control — the yellow information bar is displayed to let you know; and you decide whether or not the popup should open. Or you can automate the process to let Firefox decide for you.

The best place to start is the Help menu. If that doesn't answer you question, visit the Firefox Central website. It contains answers to the most frequently asked questions and many tips and tricks.
